Amazon MGM is developing a Squishmallows movie

The world of family entertainment is poised for a transformation as Squishmallows, a highly popular line of soft, collectible toys, is set to make its cinematic debut. A media source reports that Amazon MGM is at the helm of this project, developing a major feature film centered around the beloved brand. The studio has secured licensing rights and is co-producing the film in collaboration with Jazwares, the creator of the Squishmallows.

To bring this venture to fruition, Amazon MGM is partnering with notable producer Beau Flynn, known for his work on hits like “Moana” and “Hello Kitty.” Shelby Thomas, associated with FlynnPictureCo, will supervise the production. The deal suggests a strong commitment from Amazon MGM to create a globally appealing, multifaceted event film, although specifics about the film’s format—be it animated, live-action, or a hybrid—remain under wraps.

Since their launch in 2017, Squishmallows have witnessed an exponential rise in popularity, evolving into a billion-dollar enterprise that spans 60 countries. Insiders indicate that the brand sells approximately two toys every second, attesting to its high demand. Featuring a diverse range of over 3,000 original characters—from the endearing Cam the Cat to unique creations like Bigfoots and Axolotls—Squishmallows captivates a broad audience, appealing to children, teenagers, adults, and collectors alike. To date, more than 600 million units have been sold, underscoring the brand’s widespread acceptance.

The versatility of the Squishmallows brand extends beyond toys; they also occupy licensing spaces in apparel, health, beauty, and home décor, further cementing their foothold in the consumer market. The venture has been strategically supported by a partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) since 2021, which is likely to enhance the brand’s visibility and market outreach.

Producer Beau Flynn has demonstrated a knack for handling expansive intellectual properties, with successful entries such as “Jungle Cruise” and several major films under his belt. Notably, Flynn is currently involved in the production of an animated “Hello Kitty” film slated for a theatrical release in July 2028, suggesting that his expertise will be instrumental in crafting the Squishmallows cinematic experience.

As Amazon MGM accelerates its commitment to family-friendly content, the forthcoming Squishmallows film has the potential to redefine the companionship between toys and storytelling, captivating audiences of all ages.
