Binance Resumes Withdrawals After Billion Hack

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, has announced the resumption of withdrawals following a significant security breach that resulted in the theft of approximately .3 billion from its digital wallets. This event, which has raised concerns across the cryptocurrency sector, was acknowledged by the company as an unprecedented incident. The exchange initiated a phased approach on Sunday to ensure that services are restored securely and safely.

Richard Teng, Binance’s co-CEO, expressed a commitment to absorb the financial impact of the stolen funds, emphasizing that users would not incur any losses due to this incident. The resumption of withdrawals specifically includes 15 major digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, Solana, and Ethereum, with plans to restore additional assets based on user demand and ongoing security checks.

As of 10:30 a.m. ET, Binance reported processing around .6 billion in withdrawals and billion in new deposits, indicating a swift response to the crisis. Despite this progress, the company warned that some users might experience delays or longer processing times as it works to stabilize its systems.

The exchange has stated that it has managed to cover about 95% of the stolen amount, utilizing its Secure Assets Fund for Users, which contains roughly billion in Bitcoin, along with other corporate resources. However, some tokens remain uncovered due to their less liquid nature in the market, requiring additional time to secure at the necessary scale.

The FBI recently confirmed that a group linked to North Korea, known as TraderTraitor, was responsible for the cyber heist. These actors are reported to be converting the stolen funds primarily into Ethereum, further complicating recovery efforts. Binance has been proactive in collaborating with law enforcement and cybersecurity partners to track and possibly recuperate the stolen assets. Approximately billion of the stolen property has reportedly been frozen thanks to the joint efforts of various cryptocurrency firms.

In its communications post-breach, Binance has expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging period while recognizing the difficulties faced by users. The company’s commitment to maintaining trust and ensuring the security of its platform remains at the forefront of its recovery efforts.
