Brendan Fraser’s Mummy sequel officially retitled ahead of 2027 release
Universal Pictures has officially announced the title for the next installment in the beloved Mummy franchise, revealing that the upcoming film will be dubbed “The Mummy: Book of the Dead.” Scheduled for theatrical release on October 15, 2027, the project is set to be directed by the dynamic duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their recent work on the Scream series. The screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, who previously contributed to “The Family Plan.”
Brendan Fraser is returning to his iconic role as Rick O’Connell, a character that has garnered a loyal following since its inception. Joining him on screen will be Rachel Weisz as Evie O’Connell, along with a cast that includes John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor, and Oded Fehr. This latest film marks a significant moment in the franchise’s history, rekindling the magic that captured audience’s imaginations in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Mummy narrative first captivated viewers when Boris Karloff portrayed the title character in the 1932 film. The franchise saw a resurgence in popularity beginning with the 1999 release of The Mummy, directed by Stephen Sommers, which effectively redefined the horror-adventure genre for a new generation. The 1999 film was followed by “The Mummy Returns” in 2001 and a third installment, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” released in 2008. Although the latter was met with mixed reviews, the series overall has proven to be a lucrative venture for Universal Pictures, amassing over .8 billion in global box office revenue through its various entries.
Sean Daniel, who has been integral to the franchise through five previous installments, returns as producer, collaborating with fellow producers William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment. Executive producer roles are held by Fraser alongside Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown, ensuring a continuation of the franchise legacy. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett aim to bring a fresh but familiar approach, having successfully revitalized the horror genre with their recent Scream films, which have received both critical and commercial acclaim.
As the franchise gears up for this latest addition, anticipation among fans remains high for “The Mummy: Book of the Dead,” which promises to blend nostalgia with a contemporary twist, reigniting interest in one of cinema’s most enduring monster narratives.
