BTS Declines to Submit for 2027 Grammy Awards Consideration
In a significant development within the global music scene, the popular South Korean group BTS has confirmed that it will not submit its music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 7, 2027. This decision was collectively announced by all seven members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—through their individual social media accounts.
The statement released by the group emphasized their desire for their music to be appreciated for its authenticity, transcending constraints of region and language. They expressed gratitude towards their dedicated fan base, referred to as the “Army,” for their unwavering support throughout the years.
This announcement comes on the heels of the Recording Academy introducing a new category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which aims to honor artistic excellence in pop music originating from Asian markets. The category will include a range of musical styles, such as K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, and recognizes performances that prominently feature one or more Asian languages. This evolution in the Grammy’s structure could be seen as an attempt to diversify the awards and acknowledge the growing influence of Asian artists in the global music industry.
BTS, which has received nominations in various categories during past Grammy ceremonies, including Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video, has yet to secure a Grammy win despite their significant impact on the music landscape. Each of the group’s members has been a voting member of the Recording Academy since 2019. Speculation surrounding the potential for a first win was particularly heightened this year, especially following the release of their fifth studio album, “Arirang,” in March. The album, which arrived after the members fulfilled their mandatory military service, achieved remarkable success by topping Billboard’s main singles and albums charts.
Currently, BTS is on its “World Tour Arirang,” recently concluding a series of performances in Europe. The group made headlines with its appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final Halftime Show, where they showcased their acclaimed single “Dynamite” alongside notable artists like Madonna, Shakira, and Justin Bieber. This marked a historic moment, as it was the first halftime show in the tournament’s 96-year history. The ensemble is set to resume performances in the United States, starting at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on August 1.
