Capcom to Evolve RE Engine into Collaborative AI-Generation Game Engine for Future Game Development

Capcom, the renowned developer behind franchises such as Resident Evil and Street Fighter, has announced significant advancements in its RE Engine, essential to its game production framework. At a recent technology conference dubbed the “Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026,” the company detailed plans to evolve its game engine into what it describes as an “AI-generation game engine.”

During the conference on October 2, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented insights into the REX Project, which outlines a multi-phase strategy aimed at enhancing the RE Engine. The proposed upgrades are designed to address various challenges faced by the company in modern game development, including the increasing scale and complexity of game titles. Ishida identified three primary issues: the extended time required for processes due to the vast size of current games, the need for an accessible engine that can accommodate a growing workforce, and the necessity of integrating artificial intelligence into development workflows to enhance efficiency.

A media source noted that the REX initiative aims to streamline game development by improving factors such as game performance, quality assurance, and tools used in the creation process. Instead of building an entirely new engine, Capcom is opting for incremental enhancements to transition the RE Engine into the next generation of game development. Notably, some of these advancements will be made open-source to facilitate AI training, reinforcing the company’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence as a tool rather than a replacement for human creativity.

While Capcom has historically expressed reluctance to use AI for generating game assets, it has confirmed its intent to utilize this technology to optimize production practices. The integration of AI is seen as a means to lighten the load on developers, making the creative process more efficient without compromising artistic integrity.

Additionally, Capcom continues to plan for the future, with executive producer Jun Takeuchi indicating that the Resident Evil series is being developed along two tracks, likely to ensure it remains contemporary as the gaming landscape evolves. This announcement follows a year of notable releases, including three highly acclaimed titles and adaptations into film, underscoring Capcom’s robust position in both the gaming and entertainment industries.

As the gaming world watches closely, Capcom’s commitment to evolving the RE Engine through AI integration could set a new benchmark in game development, balancing technological advancement with unmatched storytelling and engagement.
