CBS Approves Comedy Pilot ‘Hilda! (In Lights!)’ Centered on 70-Year-Old Protagonist
In a bold move reflective of its evolving programming strategy, CBS has become the first broadcast network to initiate the development of a pilot for the 2027-28 television season. The network has approved the single-camera comedy titled “Hilda! (In Lights!)” from CBS Studios, marking an important step in a series of ambitious projects the network is pursuing.
The creative force behind “Hilda! (In Lights!)” is Abbey Caldwell, known for her work on the series “Laid.” The narrative centers on a 70-year-old woman from Nebraska who, in an inspiring yet humorous twist, relocates to New York City to chase her lifelong ambition of performing on Broadway, despite lacking any theatrical experience. This unique premise places Hilda at the heart of a story about aspiration and tenacity, aiming to resonate with audiences of all ages.
Caldwell will also serve as an executive producer alongside Will Graham, Max Linsky, and Tonia Davis for Invitation Media. The introduction of “Hilda! (In Lights!)” is part of CBS’s strategy to diversify its comedy offerings, moving away from the traditional multi-camera format that has long been a staple of the network. In an unprecedented shift, the upcoming 2026-27 season will feature a greater number of single-camera sitcoms than multi-camera alternatives, showcasing titles such as “Ghosts” and “Eternally Yours,” compared to “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.”
The pilot for “Hilda! (In Lights!)” is among the first three projects that CBS identified as potential contenders for the upcoming season. Following its approval, both “Hilda! (In Lights!)” and another forensic drama, “I Know Who You Are,” have been further developed, each receiving orders for two additional scripts. Additionally, CBS has confirmed the establishment of a development room for “Flint,” a cop drama starring and produced by Matt LeBlanc.
As the network looks toward the future, it has also put forth plans for a potential medical spinoff related to the series “Fire Country” and “Sheriff Country.” The ongoing projects from CBS Studios, including “I Know Who You Are” and “Flint,” remain active in the competitive landscape of prime-time television.
If “Hilda! (In Lights!)” transitions from pilot to series production, it would not only enrich CBS’s roster of comedies but also join the ranks of notable series featuring female leads in their 70s, alongside the upcoming series “Matlock,” starring Kathy Bates. This could signal a significant shift in how stories are told and who gets to tell them, reflecting broader societal changes and the demand for more diverse representation in television narratives.
