CBS Executive Faces Setback with Latest ’60 Minutes’ Controversy

The latest episode of 60 Minutes has registered a significant decline in viewership, marking the lowest ratings for a fourth episode since the beginning of the 21st century. According to data from a media source, just 6.06 million people tuned in to the October 10 episode of the iconic newsmagazine. This figure represents a stark drop from the previous year, when the show attracted nearly one million more viewers during the same slot.

The episode also performed poorly in the coveted demographic of viewers aged 25-54, which is particularly important for advertisers. Only 767,000 individuals within this age group watched the program, signaling a concerning trend for a series that has historically maintained a robust audience. The drop comes in stark contrast to the increased 10.2 million total viewers and 2 million in the same demographic for the episode that aired just a week prior, which benefited from a lead-in from an NFL game.

Despite featuring significant segments that included Lesley Stahl reporting from the West Bank and an interview with the director of the Secret Service, the program failed to capture the attention of its audience. CBS reportedly anticipated a decline due to the absence of an NFL lead-in, as a late game on Fox significantly limited potential viewership.

The current ratings issue follows a season that began with a similar downturn, raising alarm among network executives. This season’s premiere also recorded the lowest ratings for a debut since 2000, presenting a worrying portfolio for the news division of CBS.

These challenges coincide with controversy surrounding Bari Weiss’s leadership as editor-in-chief of CBS News. Since her appointment late last year, Weiss has faced criticism for significant staffing changes and perceptions of an editorial tilt, particularly towards conservative viewpoints. High-profile firings have included several esteemed correspondents, igniting substantial backlash and concerns over the network’s journalistic integrity.

The overall context suggests that CBS’s attempts to pivot 60 Minutes towards a new audience may be backfiring, prompting discussions on how to recapture its former glory and why recent strategic shifts may not resonate with traditional viewers.
