Chipotle reports earnings below expectations while same-store sales rise for third consecutive quarter
Chipotle Mexican Grill has recently released its quarterly financial results, showcasing a mixed performance that reflects both challenges and growth potential within the competitive restaurant industry. According to a media source, the company reported a notable decrease in its restaurant-level operating margin while simultaneously experiencing an uptick in customer traffic and same-store sales.
During the third quarter of fiscal 2026, Chipotle’s net income was documented at 9.9 million, translating to earnings of 27 cents per share—down from the previous year’s earnings of 29 cents per share. The restaurant chain’s operating margin has also contracted, falling from 24.5% to 23.3% over the same period. However, revenue remained steady at .29 billion, matching analysts’ expectations. This stability in revenue was supported by the establishment of new locations, with Chipotle opening 84 new company-owned restaurants and five additional locations operated by licensees.
Despite facing early October headwinds—when industry-wide trends saw a decline—Chipotle’s leadership remains optimistic about its trajectory. CEO Scott Boatwright emphasized the effectiveness of the company’s growth strategies during an earnings conference call, citing a return to customer growth after a brief slowdown. The company anticipates a robust performance in the upcoming months, particularly as customer traffic has seen a resurgence recently.
Looking at the performance of different consumer demographics, Chipotle discovered a surprising trend: during the quarter, low-income patrons outspent their high-income counterparts for the first time this year. This shift reportedly occurred even without significant discounts, indicating a strong engagement from lower-income consumers amid a period when promotions were minimal.
For the fourth quarter, the company projects an approximate same-store sales growth of around 2%, sustaining its forecast of low-single-digit growth for the full fiscal year. Moving forward, Chipotle plans to continue its expansion, targeting the opening of 340 to 360 new company-owned restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, alongside an additional 15 to 25 international locations.
As the year draws to a close, the company’s mixed quarterly results illustrate both the potential for recovery amidst industry challenges and the resilience of the Chipotle brand, poised to navigate shifting consumer preferences effectively.
