Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram recall nearly 1 million vehicles due to camera malfunction

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced a significant recall affecting nearly one million vehicles globally due to a software issue that could impair the functionality of rearview cameras. This decision impacts approximately 955,000 vehicles, spanning several models under the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram brands.

In the United States alone, more than 848,000 vehicles are included in the recall. The affected models encompass various 2026 and 2027 versions, including the Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid, and Voyager, along with the Dodge Charger, Jeep Cherokee, Compass, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wrangler, and multiple Ram trucks (1500, 2500, and ProMaster). The recall also extends to around 107,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico, and other markets worldwide, with nearly 83,000 in Canada, 8,000 in Mexico, and 16,000 distributed outside North America.

Stellantis has advised drivers that if the rearview camera display is not operational, they should rely on traditional mirror checks while reversing. Fortunately, the automaker has stated that it is currently unaware of any related accidents or injuries stemming from this issue. Vehicle owners will soon receive notifications detailing the software updates required to rectify the problem, which can be implemented via over-the-air updates. These updates will be flagged on the vehicle’s media display when they become available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has previously mandated that all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds must include rear-visibility technology—a regulation aimed at curbing the alarming statistics surrounding backover accidents, particularly those involving young children. In the U.S., backover incidents result in approximately 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries annually, with children under five years old comprising a significant percentage of these tragic outcomes.

Beginning next month, recall notices will be dispatched to affected vehicle owners, providing detailed information and guidance on how to proceed. This proactive measure underscores Stellantis’s commitment to vehicle safety and customer care, as the company addresses a potential risk to drivers and pedestrians alike.
