Cold and cloudy conditions expected across South Africa with disruptive snow forecasted in the Eastern Cape
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued forecasts predicting widespread cloudy and cold conditions across the nation, with particular attention drawn to significant snowfall expected in the Eastern Cape. This weather event is expected to have various disruptive effects, prompting the issuance of impact-based weather warnings.
A yellow level 2 warning is in effect for the eastern regions of the Eastern Cape, where disruptive snow may lead to icy roads, subsequently resulting in traffic disruptions. Furthermore, a yellow level 4 warning has been issued for coastal areas from Plettenberg Bay to KuGompo (East London), where adverse wind and wave conditions may hinder navigation at sea. Small vessels in these areas are at risk of taking on water due to the challenging maritime conditions. The SAWS employs a color-coded weather warning system, where yellow alerts indicate a moderate risk of weather-related impacts, and higher alert levels reflect increased severity and the need for preparation.
The frigid weather conditions are also projected to affect the southern Namakwa district in the Northern Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape interior. Each province in South Africa will experience varying weather patterns, with some regions expected to see significant temperature fluctuations.
In Gauteng, residents can anticipate cloudy conditions with temperatures ranging from a brisk 3°C to a maximum of 16°C. Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga region may experience slightly warmer weather in the Lowveld, while isolated morning showers are possible over the central areas. Limpopo’s weather will primarily be partly cloudy and warm, with morning showers expected in certain parts.
In the North West province, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy and cold, with temperatures dipping, while Free State residents should prepare for chilly weather with potential thundershowers and windy conditions in the east. The Northern Cape and Western Cape are also set for variances in weather, including fog, cold temperatures, and isolated rain showers along the southern coastal regions.
Overall, as the country braces for these cold conditions, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and prepared, especially in areas under severe weather warnings.
