Colorado’s Front Range Passenger Rail may add second stop in Colorado Springs

The Front Range Passenger Rail District (FRPR) has unveiled a new draft plan for the Colorado Connector (CoCo), a proposed intercity passenger train that aims to enhance connectivity along the Front Range of Colorado. This plan comes as a significant step toward improving transit options in southern Colorado, specifically highlighting the potential establishment of an additional station in northern Colorado Springs.

According to information released by the FRPR, the plan projects a nearly twofold increase in annual returns for Colorado Springs, estimating a rise from .5 million to approximately .6 million. This financial boost is expected to facilitate both connectivity improvements and operational efficiencies, ultimately benefiting local residents and businesses.

The Colorado Connector, which garnered its name following a public vote that engaged over 25,000 residents, is proposed to serve a corridor connecting 12 cities, from Fort Collins in the north to Pueblo in the south. The phased implementation of this service is scheduled to commence in 2029, beginning in the northern part of the route. By 2032, the initiative aims to extend service to include Colorado Springs and Pueblo, reinforcing the commitment to enhance public transportation options throughout the region.

Another notable feature of the new draft plan is the proposed relocation of the downtown Colorado Springs station to the eastern side of the tracks. This modification is intended to improve accessibility for residents and visitors traveling to downtown Colorado Springs, thereby promoting economic activity in the area. The FRPR emphasizes that this plan formalizes a commitment to provide rail services in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo within five years of securing necessary funding while focusing on the downtown areas of these cities.
