Crunchyroll Store to Exclusively Serve Mega and Ultimate Fan Tiers Starting August
In a strategic shift aimed at enhancing its subscription model, Crunchyroll announced significant updates to its eCommerce platform, the Crunchyroll Store, which will transition into a space exclusively serving its Mega and Ultimate Fan subscription tiers starting in August. The precise date for discontinuing the current store format has yet to be disclosed by the company.
As part of this transition, certain items in the store will now be categorized as “final sale.” This designation means that returns or refunds will only be processed if products are found to be damaged or defective, a policy specifically applicable to final sale items. Open orders will continue to be fulfilled, even for products released after the transition, and the company will continue to accept Crunchyroll Store gift cards until August 14. Notably, the privileges associated with store discounts for Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan memberships will terminate on the same date.
The updated store is set to offer curated merchandise selections, highlighting Crunchyroll-exclusive products that fans may find appealing. In conjunction with these changes, the company has initiated a Summer Sale, which commenced on Tuesday.
In February of this year, Crunchyroll increased the prices for all of its subscription tiers within the U.S. market. In this restructuring, the Fan Tier price rose from .99 to .99, the Mega Fan Tier from .99 to .99, and the Ultimate Fan Tier from .99 to .99 per month. These tiers provide varying benefits to subscribers, ranging from ad-free viewing to offline access and discounts on merchandise.
Crunchyroll’s growth trajectory has been notable, as the company surpassed 21 million paid subscribers globally in May. However, this expansion has not been without its challenges. Earlier in March, the organization underwent a significant restructuring that resulted in layoffs but was positioned as a strategic shift rather than a cost-cutting measure.
The company continues to evolve its business model following the acquisition of Right Stuf in August 2022, which has seen a migration of products from the Right Stuf store to the Crunchyroll Store since October 2023. This move reflects a broader strategy to consolidate Crunchyroll’s eCommerce services and enhance the shopping experience for its growing fanbase.
Crunchyroll operates as a joint venture between U.S.-based Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan’s Aniplex, both subsidiaries of Tokyo-based Sony Group. As the anime streaming landscape evolves, Crunchyroll aims to solidify its market position while continuing to engage its diverse user base.
