Danny Boyle’s ‘Ink’ to kick off Venice Film Festival

Danny Boyle’s latest cinematic endeavor, a biopic titled “Ink,” centered around media mogul Rupert Murdoch, is set to mark the opening of the 83rd Venice Film Festival on September 2. The prestigious event will take place at the Sala Grande, located in the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido.

The film features a talented cast including Jack O’Connell, portraying The Sun newspaper’s editor Larry Lamb, alongside Guy Pearce in the role of Rupert Murdoch and Claire Foy as Jules Davies. The screenplay, penned by James Graham, who is also known for his Tony-nominated play “Dear England,” serves as the foundation for the film. Boyle’s directorial vision aims to unpack the intricate dynamics of Murdoch’s approach to media and his strategic acquisition of the British tabloid, as well as the consequential changes to the industry’s landscape.

Boyle collaborates with producers Tessa Ross and Michael Ellenberg, which marks a reunion following their successful partnership on the Academy Award-winning “Slumdog Millionaire.” Other notable producers include Tracey Seaward, and the film’s executive production team boasts industry veterans including Anna Marsh and Ron Halpern, among others.

The festival’s director, Alberto Barbera, highlighted the significance of “Ink,” noting that it depicts Murdoch’s controversial takeover of “The Sun,” an act that transformed the publication into Britain’s leading tabloid while impacting competitors like “The Mirror.” This reflection on media ethics is likely to resonate, particularly with contemporary audiences aware of the ongoing discourse about journalistic integrity and the impact of media consolidation.

Studiocanal has fully financed “Ink” and is set to distribute the film in multiple countries, including Italy, the UK, Germany, and Australia upon its theatrical release.

In terms of technical craftsmanship, the film features cinematography by Alwin H. Küchler and design work from Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl, further emphasizing its production quality. The editing is overseen by Fin Oates, with the musical score composed by Daniel Pemberton.

The Venice Film Festival, running from September 2 to 12, is heralded as a launchpad for films destined for critical acclaim and awards recognition. With “Ink” set to premiere, anticipation is high for its reception within both the festival circuit and broader audiences.
