Electric Ferrari Unveiled as Latest Addition to Luxury Sports Car Market
After an extended wait of eight years, Ferrari has officially unveiled the Luce, its highly anticipated electric vehicle (EV). The debut took place in Rome, marking a significant milestone for the iconic brand, which had hinted at its intentions to enter the EV market back in January 2018. At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, ex-chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne first expressed enthusiasm for a “prancing horse” EV, suggesting that Ferrari would be a leader in the electric supercar segment.
Although Ferrari does not hold the title of the first car manufacturer to produce an electric vehicle, it has generated immense anticipation over the years due to a strategic build-up of information. Initially dubbed the Elettrica, the vehicle’s development has included a public preview of an innovative powertrain, followed by a design collaboration with renowned Apple designer Jony Ive, culminating in the grand reveal of the Luce.
The Luce represents a departure from traditional Ferrari models and is touted as one of the most significant automotive achievements from the historic Maranello factory in decades. With specifications that reflect high-performance capabilities, the vehicle is equipped with four individual motors, each situated on a wheel, totaling an impressive output of over 1,000 horsepower when utilizing Boost mode. The rear axle delivers 832 horsepower while the front axle adds an additional 282 horsepower, achieving full power in less than a second. The Luce boasts a remarkable acceleration, reaching 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and a top speed of 192 mph.
Further enhancing the Luce’s appeal is its 122-kWh battery, one of the largest available in production electric vehicles. The battery supports rapid charging capabilities of up to 350 kW on an 800-volt system, offering a driving range exceeding 329 miles on a single charge. Despite its substantial battery, the Luce has a curb weight of 4,982 pounds—only slightly heavier than Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV.
As the automotive industry increasingly pivots towards electrification, the Ferrari Luce sets a new benchmark in combining the brand’s legendary performance heritage with cutting-edge electric vehicle technology.
