EU supports Weber on immigration, plans to strengthen Frontex and establish hubs in Africa

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has expressed his support for immigration proposals put forward by Manfred Weber, the President of the European People’s Party. Tajani emphasized the urgent need to bolster Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, as well as the establishment of repatriation hubs in Africa. These comments were shared on the social media platform X.

In his communication, Tajani indicated a shared vision with Weber’s recent article in a major media source, advocating for a unified defense of Europe’s external borders. He highlighted the necessity for Frontex to evolve into a robust agency equipped with adequate personnel, resources, and authority to effectively combat human trafficking and organized crime networks that exploit vulnerable migrants. Further, he called for the acceleration of repatriations for individuals lacking the legal right to remain in Europe.

Tajani also underscored that greater collaboration with countries of origin and transit is crucial. This cooperation could involve investments, local training initiatives, and the facilitation of regular migration pathways that align with Europe’s economic needs. He pointed to the situation in Ceuta, a Spanish exclave on the North African coast, as a crucial learning opportunity, illustrating that illegal immigration is a shared responsibility rather than an issue that any single country can tackle in isolation. He asserted that unilateral actions by individual nations should not transfer the burdens of immigration policies onto their neighbors.

The minister further emphasized that collaborative efforts are essential for effectively managing immigration. He reiterated the call for Europe to safeguard its borders while working toward comprehensive solutions that address the complexities of migration. In light of ongoing debates surrounding immigration in Europe, Tajani’s statements underscore the importance of joint strategies and the need for a collective approach to an increasingly global challenge.

As discussions on immigration policy continue to evolve, the significance of cooperative frameworks within the European Union becomes ever more apparent in navigating the challenges associated with migration, border security, and the welfare of displaced individuals.
