Explosive Device Discovered at Protest Outside Home of NYC Mayor Mamdani, According to Police Reports

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that an improvised explosive device was thrown during a protest outside the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, leading to the arrest of two individuals. This incident occurred during a demonstration where far-right, anti-Muslim activists clashed with counterprotesters outside Gracie Mansion.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that the device was not a hoax nor a smoke bomb, describing it as an improvised explosive device capable of causing significant harm. She indicated that further analysis would be conducted on both the device thrown and a second device discovered nearby. The arrests were made on site, with Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi taken into custody, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) joined the investigation into the incident.
According to police reports, Balat, who was among the counterprotesters, allegedly threw the explosive device at a police barrier. Fortunately, the device did not detonate. During his escape, Balat also discarded another device.
Mayor Mamdani condemned the protest led by Jake Lang, a far-right activist known for his controversial past, which includes his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots and subsequent pardon by former President Donald Trump. Mamdani stressed that the use of an explosive device not only represents a criminal act but also stands in stark contrast to the values of the diverse and inclusive community in New York City.
In his statement, Mamdani expressed that violence during protests is unjustifiable, emphasizing the importance of peaceful expression within a respectful community.
