Facebook may shift focus to become more like TikTok

In an effort to retain its user base amid increasing competition from platforms like TikTok and YouTube, Facebook is implementing sweeping changes designed to enhance user engagement. Announced recently by Tom Alison, head of Facebook, the platform will begin testing a new interface that shifts users into a full-screen video experience immediately upon opening the app. This move appears to closely mimic the features that have made TikTok highly popular among consumers.

The new format will initially launch in select regions where video content is particularly favored, with a broader rollout anticipated for the United States next year. Facebook’s leadership has acknowledged that video has become a central medium for online interaction, community formation, and commerce. However, the platform has faced notable challenges, losing approximately 20 million users in the first quarter of 2026 according to internal data, raising concerns about its future viability.

While still recognized as the world’s leading social networking site, Facebook’s dominance is being challenged. Competing platforms like YouTube and TikTok are not only growing rapidly but are also significantly capturing audience attention; TikTok reached over 1 billion monthly active users within three years of its inception, a milestone achieved more swiftly than that of Facebook. In response, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, previously launched Instagram Reels to compete with TikTok, but the current strategy focuses on revitalizing Facebook itself.

Additionally, Facebook is evolving by offering new features reminiscent of other popular services. Recently, it introduced Seller, an app aimed at facilitating the commerce aspects of its Marketplace—akin to Craigslist. Moreover, the company has launched a Forum app specifically for interactions within Facebook Groups, drawing inspiration from Reddit-style community engagement.

Changes are also in the pipeline for user verification on the platform. Facebook now offers a free verification badge for users who can complete a simple selfie verification process, alongside its previously launched paid subscription model, Meta Verified.

As Facebook navigates these adjustments, it demonstrates an acute awareness of the rising competition in the social media landscape and the need to adapt its offerings to maintain relevance among users. The forthcoming interface changes and new features could play a crucial role in reshaping user retention and engagement strategies in an increasingly video-dominant marketing landscape.
