Google introduces blood pressure and insulin resistance tracking features in new updates for Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5

Google has recently commenced the rollout of new health-related features for the Pixel Watch, encompassing blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends, and metrics for sleep breathing quality. These enhancements were previewed during the launch of the Pixel Watch 5 last month, marking a significant advancement in the smartwatch’s capabilities as part of Google’s Health Guardian initiative.

The Health Guardian encompasses a suite of proactive tools aimed at supporting users’ health and safety. Among the features is Breathing Emergency Detection, which is currently available in Europe for Pixel Watch models 4 and 5.

A standout addition, the blood pressure trends feature, operates by passively measuring pulse and movement patterns over a span of a month. This feature aims to enable users to identify persistent cardiovascular trends early, functioning without the need for cuffs or manual calibration. This technology leverages extensive datasets, employing billions of minutes of heart and movement data to provide accurate insights. To accumulate usable data, users must consistently track their metrics for at least five days within any week.

In parallel, the insulin resistance trends function allows users to monitor changes in metabolic health without requiring invasive measures such as blood draws. This feature provides insights about how effectively the body processes energy from food, drawing on data collected over a minimum of seven days in a given month. The underlying technology is supported by Google’s robust sensor foundational model, which has been pre-trained on over a trillion minutes of data voluntarily provided by five million users.

These trend insights will be available in the Google Health app, with reports being generated on the first day of each month. Likewise, metrics concerning sleep breathing quality will offer users a breakdown of their overnight breathing patterns, detailing the time spent in optimal breathing and identifying longer-term trends through monthly reports.

Users of the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 can begin utilizing these three new features in the Google Health app as soon as this week, with access provided at no additional cost. The first reports are expected to be available by early October. Beyond Pixel Watch users, those subscribed to Google Health Premium will also enjoy similar features on the Fitbit Air later in the year, extending the benefits to a broader audience and enhancing the overall user experience in health monitoring and management.
