Google unveils Gemini 3.5 Transcribe, enhancing AI-powered speech-to-text capabilities
In a notable advancement within its AI portfolio, Google has announced the release of Gemini 3.5 Transcribe, a model specifically tailored to enhance voice-to-text functionalities. This technology is designed to streamline the process of converting spoken language into polished written text by eliminating filler words such as “ums” and “uhs,” alongside allowing users to make corrections in real time. Initially integrated into the Gboard “Rambler” feature for the Google Pixel 11, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is set to extend its capabilities throughout the wider Google ecosystem soon.
The company has asserted that this model significantly outperforms its predecessor, Chirp 3, in both speed and accuracy. Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is reportedly 70 percent faster in processing voice input into transcribed text. Its live-speech error rate is recorded at a promising 5.5 percent, a modest improvement over Chirp 3’s 7.32 percent. While these adjustments may appear minimal, reducing typographical errors during voice input processes remains a critical need for users, making this enhancement particularly valuable.
Moreover, the functionality of this new AI model extends beyond mere transcription. It is designed to capture the nuances of spoken communication with greater fidelity. Along with eliminating verbal tics, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe can dynamically adjust text inputs when users self-correct and can even incorporate custom vocabulary tailored to specific terminologies or jargon. This functionality supports 85 languages and accommodates up to three speakers in pre-recorded audio formats.
However, potential drawbacks accompany this heightened convenience. Users may find themselves increasingly reliant on AI interpretations, which, while designed to improve coherence, can alter the intended wording of a speaker’s message. In practice, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe demonstrates the capability to refine inconsistencies effectively, particularly in short segments of spoken text. Nonetheless, the reliance on AI to mediate one’s actual verbal expression may not be fitting in all contexts, particularly where precise wording is critical.
