GTA 6’s detail level is so high that no single Rockstar employee has seen everything in the game

The development of “Red Dead Redemption 2,” a widely discussed entry in the pantheon of modern video games, intertwined with the unexpected intricacies of its animation details, including a notable aspect: the animated horse testicles. These features, which exhibit realistic reactions to temperature changes—contracting in cold weather and expanding in warmth—have become iconic representations of the game’s remarkable attention to detail. Contrary to popular belief, these animations were not specified as development requirements by Rockstar Games but rather emerged as an initiative taken by a developer or small team working independently. This insight was discovered during a visit by a journalist from a media source to Rockstar North, where discussions about the forthcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI” (GTA 6) took place.

As conveyed by Aaron Garbut, the head of development at Rockstar, the concept of such features did not stem from formal directives. Instead, they were conceived through individual creativity and discretion. This anecdote underscores a broader culture within the company, where the complexity and scope of a project like GTA 6 mean no one person has comprehensive oversight of all its elements. Garbut’s comments suggest that this decentralized approach could yield additional surprising features in the upcoming release, which include previously leaked details regarding nudity.

Moreover, various insights gathered from the journalist’s trip reveal that the production scale for GTA 6 is notably larger than its predecessor, “GTA V.” While “GTA V” had an art production team of approximately five or six, GTA 6 reportedly now boasts around 65 artists. This expansion reflects Rockstar’s growth since the launch of “Red Dead Redemption 2,” increasing its workforce from 2,441 to approximately 4,711 employees distributed across multiple offices.

As excitement builds toward the scheduled release of GTA 6 on November 19, it faces challenges, including ongoing employment disputes within the company. Rockstar North is currently dealing with an employment tribunal over allegations surrounding the dismissal of 31 employees, alongside scrutiny from recent gameplay footage leaks that have emerged independent of the company’s marketing strategy.

The complex interplay of creative independence, increased production capacity, and operational hurdles illustrates the dynamic environment at Rockstar as it approaches one of the most anticipated game releases in recent history.
