Hackers demonstrate Neo Geo Doom ports are feasible
In recent developments surrounding the iconic video game Doom, two innovative projects have emerged that challenge the assertion previously made by gaming experts regarding the impossibility of porting the game to the Neo Geo console. A media source suggested that the limitations of Neo Geo’s sprite-based display hardware and its lack of a frame buffer rendered Doom unplayable on this platform. However, a dedicated group of developers has made substantial strides toward creating functional Doom ports that operate on the original Neo Geo hardware.
These ambitious projects highlight the creative capabilities of programmers who explore the potential of legacy consoles. While both adaptations incorporate significant graphical compromises that would have hindered a marketable release in the 1990s, they reflect the resourcefulness of the gaming community when confronting technological limitations.
One notable project is titled “Doom64KB,” developed by coder FrenkelS. This initiative utilizes an earlier port designed for 16-bit PC processors, repurposing it to function on the Neo Geo system. The adaptation cleverly employs the console’s fixed layer—a segment of display memory typically designated for graphical interfaces and heads-up displays (HUDs)—to create a rudimentary frame buffer. This approach permits the animation of Doom maps with a certain level of fluidity, albeit at a constrained resolution of 28×32 pixels while using 8×8 pixel tiles and a limited color palette of 16 hues. This restriction affects visual effects, particularly the “light diminishing” feature that influences the game’s depth perception.
An even further modified version of this engine leverages the Neo Geo’s sprite memory, enhancing the output resolution to 80×56 pixels through the use of 4×4 pixel blocks. While this upgrade may come with a compromise in frame rate, future optimizations and hardware advancements, such as the anticipated Neo Geo AES+, could yield smoother performance.
These projects stand not only as a testament to the ingenuity of developers but also showcase the enduring appeal of Doom.
