Heavy rain, snow, and strong winds prompt flood warnings in three provinces on Wednesday
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a series of warnings indicating that significant rainfall, which has the potential to cause flooding, is expected in various regions, including the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape. This weather pattern is predicted to persist until Thursday, bringing with it not only rainfall but also snow, strong winds, and rough sea conditions across certain areas.
An Orange Level 8 warning has been designated for the eastern regions of the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape, as well as the municipality of Nelson Mandela Bay, along with Koukamma, Kouga, and Sundays River Valley local municipalities in the Eastern Cape. This warning highlights the risk of road and bridge flooding, perilous fast-moving water, and possible major road closures.
Meanwhile, an Orange Level 5 warning has been issued for Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and other municipalities in the Eastern Cape, where risks include life-threatening flooding, settlement displacements, and mudslides. A Yellow Level 4 warning complements these findings, suggesting that disruptive rain could lead to flooding in settlements, roads, and other vulnerable areas within the Swellendam Local Municipality, the Central Karoo region, and parts of the Garden Route District Municipality.
For coastal areas, a Yellow Level 2 warning has been established, cautioning that high waves and rough navigation conditions may pose risks to small vessels between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay. Additionally, snowfall is anticipated in northern high-lying areas within the Eastern Cape, which may contribute to icy roads and traffic disruptions on Thursday.
SAWS employs a color-coded warning system to effectively communicate the level of risk associated with potential weather impacts. Yellow signifies moderate risk requiring caution, while orange indicates a higher level of risk that necessitates careful preparation. It is essential for the public to remain informed and vigilant, especially in regions affected by these severe weather warnings.
As diverse weather conditions are expected in other provinces, including fine and warm weather in Gauteng, largely cloudy weather in the Western Cape, and cool temperatures with isolated showers in KwaZulu-Natal, residents across South Africa are advised to prepare accordingly.
