Hyundai recalls over 94,000 vehicles due to potential fire risk
Hyundai Motor Company has initiated a recall affecting approximately 94,622 vehicles due to a serious fire risk linked to the overheating of motors on powered front seats. This action comes as a result of a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which outlines the potential hazards associated with the affected vehicles.
According to Hyundai, the issue arises from the front seat slide and height adjustment control switch used on non-memory power seats, which may become dislodged or damaged when subjected to external forces. This malfunction can lead to the switch remaining engaged, causing the seat adjustment motor to operate continuously. Prolonged use of the motor increases the risk of overheating, which can lead to fire hazards while the vehicle is either in motion or parked.
The NHTSA has identified key warning signs that vehicle owners should be aware of, including a burning odor emanating from the seats and the presence of inoperative seat control switches. In light of these dangers, Hyundai is advising owners of the affected models to exercise caution by parking outside and away from other vehicles or structures until necessary repairs can be made.
The recall specifically impacts the 2017 through 2020 model years of the Genesis G80 and the 2015 through 2016 model years of the Hyundai Genesis sedans. Notably, Hyundai estimates that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles contain a defect, though the company is allaying concerns by stating they are currently developing a remedy for the issue.
In an ongoing commitment to safety, Hyundai informs that vehicle owners will receive notification via mail and can take their cars to a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer for repairs, which will be provided at no cost. As of early October, there have been reported incidents of fire related to this defect, although no injuries or crashes have been reported in the United States.
Hyundai’s proactive response to this safety concern reflects its commitment to customer safety and product reliability, ultimately working to uphold consumer trust in its brand.
