Israel Launches Attack on Southern Lebanon Amid Ongoing Ceasefire Violations

Tensions have escalated in the Middle East once again as Israeli military operations intensify, particularly targeting locations associated with the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. Amid frequent airstrikes and civilian harm, the fragile ceasefire established in November 2024 appears to be unraveling, raising concerns about regional stability and humanitarian impacts.

Israeli airstrikes have targeted Blat and Wadi Barghouti in several strikes in southern Lebanon’s Iqlim al-Tuffah region, marking a notable deterioration in adherence to a ceasefire reached in November 2024 between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, as reported by ZezapTV correspondents on the ground. The Israeli military stated its forces were launching operations against what it claims is Hezbollah infrastructure, though evidence suggests that civilian lives and infrastructure have increasingly become collateral damage in these near-daily assaults.

ZezapTV’s correspondents have indicated that, so far, no casualties have been reported from the latest series of strikes, which primarily targeted open areas nestled among forests and hills. However, the context remains grim, as on a previous Thursday, an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley resulted in one death and left 29 others injured. Tragically, the violence included the death of a 16-year-old Syrian boy named Hussein Mohsen al-Khalaf, who was killed in a strike on Kfar Dan near Baalbek, as reported by the National News Agency (NNA).

Ceasefire violations have become a troubling trend, as Israel’s military persists in its attack campaigns in Lebanon despite agreements established in November 2024 aimed at halting over a year of ongoing conflict. According to the United Nations, the violence has led to over 300 fatalities since the ceasefire’s inception, among which 127 were civilians. The broader conflict, which initially began in October 2023 and escalated to a full-scale war by September 2024, saw Israel inflicting heavy casualties, with reports of more than 4,000 dead and around 17,000 injured among those affected.

The situation escalated last week when Israeli strikes on the Bekaa Valley and the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp resulted in at least 12 deaths. Israel contends that it was targeting Hezbollah and Hamas command centers during these operations. However, the continued occupation of parts of Lebanon by Israel not only obstructs the reconstruction of border villages but also hampers the return of displaced individuals to their homes.

In response to the escalating violence, the Lebanese government has communicated that it is nearing completion of its commitment to disarm Hezbollah south of the Litani River, with a timeline of four months projected for the next phase. Conversely, Hezbollah has openly rejected this proposition, asserting that disarmament should only apply to specific territories south of the river. The group insists it will not disarm while the threat from ongoing Israeli attacks and occupation persists.
