Keanu Reeves Joins Netflix Action Movie Maelstrom After Alan Ritchson Exits
Keanu Reeves is poised to take the lead role in the upcoming Netflix action film “Maelstrom,” following the exit of Alan Ritchson from the project. As indicated by a media source, the film will be helmed by director Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his recent work on “Carry-On,” and promises an intense narrative set against the backdrop of a natural disaster.
“Maelstrom” centers on a Federal Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer who is seeking refuge in witness protection as she prepares to testify against him. The plot thickens when a fierce hurricane approaches, obstructing communication and hindering any potential reinforcements. The two protagonists find themselves not only facing the violent forces loyal to the arms dealer but also battling the encroaching chaos brought on by the storm.
The script for “Maelstrom” is being refined by screenwriter Mark Bianculli, noted for his work on “How to Rob a Bank,” and reinterprets a previous draft contributed by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick. The film has a long history, initially pitched as a spec script back in 1993, after which it was acquired by Warner Bros. for a significant sum. Reports from that time referred to “Maelstrom” as akin to “Die Hard” set in a hurricane, attracting considerable interest and investment mainly due to its high-concept premise.
This project marks a significant milestone for producer Jeff Robinov, who is now aligned with Netflix, and is the first under his new deal with the streaming giant. Robinov, a former president of Warner Bros. Pictures, has previously been instrumental in guiding billion-dollar franchises, including “The Dark Knight” trilogy and “The Hangover.”
Reeves has solidified his reputation as a leading action star through iconic franchises like “The Matrix” and “John Wick.” Recently, he made his Broadway debut in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Gadot,” alongside his “Bill & Ted” co-star Alex Winter. Additionally, he is in negotiations to lead James Wan’s upcoming project, “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil,” for Paramount, and has confirmed his return to voice Shadow in the anticipated “Sonic the Hedgehog 4,” set for release in 2027.
As anticipation builds for “Maelstrom,” it is clear that Reeves continues to be a formidable presence in the film industry, drawing audiences with a mix of charisma and action-driven performances.
