Layoffs expected to impact 14,259 people by end of 2026, showing 78% increase from earlier projections

Newly released data from a media source suggests that job losses in the gaming industry are set to escalate significantly, reaching an alarming total of 14,259 layoffs by the end of 2026. This figure represents a staggering 78% increase from previous estimates made earlier this year, which had projected approximately 8,025 job losses for the same period.

In January, the gaming industry experienced a more optimistic outlook, but this sentiment has changed swiftly. By July 26, the anticipated number of layoffs had risen to 9,781, underscoring a troubling trend in workforce reductions. Amir Satvat, the business development director at Tencent Games and the individual responsible for maintaining layoff statistics, noted that the current pace of job cuts is exceeding initial forecasts.

A previous projection dated July 10 had estimated 13,878 layoffs, indicating a rapid increase of 381 redundancies within a short span. The layoffs have affected several notable companies, including the termination of 32 employees at ZA/UM, 20 at 11 Bit Studios, 51 at Ubisoft Barcelona, and 22 at Red Rover Interactive, among others.

The forecasts are particularly concerning for North America, which accounts for 66% of anticipated layoffs and an overwhelming 79% of the affected workforce. Within this region, the United States comprises 48% of these layoffs, while Canada follows with 17%. Europe mirrors this trend, contributing to 30% of job losses. When combined, North America and Europe represent a staggering 95% of all layoffs predicted in this sector.

This trend of job cuts is expected to carry into 2024, with total layoffs for that year projected to reach 15,631 based on the ongoing trajectory. This anticipated climb follows a decline last year, when the gaming industry posted 9,197 layoffs. Overall, estimates over the next five years indicate that the total number of job losses in the sector may approach a harrowing 60,000.

As significant companies like Microsoft undertake substantial workforce reductions—most recently announcing 1,600 layoffs—the timing of these cuts remains uncertain. Analysts caution that some of these layoffs could be deferred to the latter half of the fiscal year. As information continues to evolve, Satvat has indicated that projections will be adjusted accordingly.
