LG addresses allegations of TV privacy violations amid concerns over user data security

In recent developments, allegations have emerged regarding LG Electronics’ smart televisions unexpectedly capturing and transmitting audio data from users. Reports by a media source and independent security researchers including Gamers Nexus and Level1Techs cite concerns over LG’s data logging practices, stating that these devices may be logging and uploading user conversations without explicit consent.

In response, LG has issued a statement defending its practices, suggesting that recent media coverage has fostered misconceptions about how its smart TVs operate. The company asserts that its devices do not “continuously record or transmit users’ conversations,” emphasizing that the technology used for wake-word detection processes information locally. Nevertheless, the interpretation of the term “continuously” has drawn scrutiny. Researchers demonstrated that LG’s televisions kept comprehensive logs of ambient conversations well beyond the expected listening period of AI assistants.

Furthermore, LG clarified that features such as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), voice recognition, and interest-based advertising are not enabled by default and require user consent. The company described ACR as a process that utilizes audio fingerprinting technology through the TV’s internal audio processor, ensuring that it does not capture screenshots, screen recordings, voice recordings, or audio recordings directly from the device.

However, LG’s response has not fully addressed broader issues surrounding data collection practices. Concerns persist regarding the extent of data gathered, the parties with whom it may be shared, and the potential vulnerabilities exploited by malicious actors. Critics are particularly focused on how privacy options are presented to users, arguing that they may be misleading.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding privacy and data security in smart devices raises vital questions about consumer rights in an increasingly interconnected digital landscape. As public awareness of data privacy issues grows, companies like LG must strive to ensure transparency and protect user information proactively.
