Lhuan-dre Pretorius sets new T20 record with unbeaten 188, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous high score
In a remarkable display of talent, South African cricketer Lhuan-dre Pretorius has shattered a long-standing record in T20 cricket. During the CSA T20 Challenge held at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Pretorius achieved an unbeaten score of 188 runs off just 79 balls, leading the Titans to a staggering total of 267 runs for three wickets. This remarkable performance eclipses the previous record of 175 not out held by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who set the benchmark during the 2013 Indian Premier League while playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Pune Warriors.
Pretorius’s innings was characterized by aggressive batting that included 13 sixes and 15 fours, showcasing his ability to dominate bowlers and score rapidly. His half-century came off a mere 24 balls, while he reached three figures in just 40 deliveries. He continued to accelerate, reaching 150 runs within 58 balls, embodying a strike rate of 237.97, which highlights his effectiveness and aggression on the field.
Following this incalculable contribution with the bat, the Titans secured a convincing victory, bowling out the Knights for 143 runs in just 17.2 overs. The bowlers played a complementary role in their triumph, with Ferreira delivering an impressive performance, taking three wickets for just 16 runs.
The achievement of the 20-year-old Pretorius in this domestic match not only solidifies his status as an emerging talent in South African cricket but also ignites discussions around the potential impact he could have at the international level. Having already represented South Africa in three one-day internationals and two Test matches, his record-breaking innings is likely to attract significant attention from selectors.
As cricket fans and analysts reflect on this extraordinary feat, it becomes evident that Pretorius’s capability to perform under pressure and his explosive batting style may herald a new era for South African cricket, positioning him as a player to watch in future competitions.
