macOS Golden Gate introduces significant updates to Liquid Glass features

The recent introduction of Liquid Glass in macOS Tahoe has not come without its fair share of scrutiny. Following its launch, numerous users took to various forums, expressing dissatisfaction with the design flaws associated with the update. Many reported concerns over issues such as contrast, readability, and overall design coherence, which some viewed as being poorly executed. In light of this backlash, Apple is now making notable adjustments as it prepares for the forthcoming macOS Golden Gate update.

One of the major changes includes the addition of a full Liquid Glass slider located in the System Settings under the Appearance section. This new feature allows users to modify the transparency levels of Liquid Glass elements, enabling them to select a clear version that permits background visibility, a more opaque variant that enhances text readability, or options that lie somewhere in between. However, it is worth noting that even the most transparent option does not fully replicate the original Liquid Glass design showcased during the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference.

The opacity adjustments aim to create a more effective diffusion of complex content, adding depth through improved edge darkening and brightened specular highlights. Furthermore, the uniformity in toolbars across applications is another initiative geared toward enhancing user experience by improving legibility for text headings and controls.

The corner radius of application windows has also undergone standardization, contributing to a more cohesive aesthetic within the macOS ecosystem. This shift is evident when comparing the rounded corners in macOS Tahoe with the less pronounced curvature in the upcoming macOS Golden Gate.

In addition to these design refinements, the new version features an edge-to-edge sidebar layout which eliminates distracting shadows and presents a cleaner interface. The sidebar icons have been restored to full color, moving away from the monochromatic scheme that users criticized in prior iterations.

Icon design has also been updated to include layers of Liquid Glass, increasing detail and allowing for improved visibility in both dark and light modes. As Apple integrates HDR technology into the user interface, it aims to create a richer visual experience, highlighting depth and dimensionality in its design language.

Currently available to developers, the public beta for macOS Golden Gate is anticipated to launch in July, with a full release scheduled for this fall. The update promises not only visual enhancements but also performance optimizations that aim to deliver a smoother, faster Mac experience.
