Mercedes-AMG unveils electric GT SUV featuring 1,153 hp and 710 kW charging capability

Mercedes-AMG recently introduced its all-electric GT SUV, a performance-oriented vehicle promising extraordinary specifications that include up to 1,153 horsepower generated by three innovative axial-flux motors. This SUV also supports DC fast charging capabilities of up to 710 kW, positioning it as a formidable contender in the electric vehicle market, particularly against established rivals like the Porsche Cayenne Electric. The first units of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV are expected to reach U.S. dealerships in the summer of 2027.

This model marks Mercedes-AMG’s first foray into developing a full-size SUV completely in-house, an endeavor that showcases the brand’s evolution in electric vehicle technology. Built on the exclusive AMG.EA electric architecture, the GT SUV is the second vehicle to utilize this framework, following the recently unveiled electric GT 4-Door Coupe. By incorporating advanced powertrains and battery technology from its previous models, Mercedes aims to provide a seamless luxury driving experience for electric enthusiasts.

The Mercedes AMG GT SUV comes in three variants tailored for the U.S. market: the GT 63 SUV, GT 55 SUV, and GT 53 SUV. Each version offers distinct performance specifications. The GT 63 SUV achieves an impressive 0-60 mph in just 2.4 seconds, while the GT 55 follows closely at 3.0 seconds, and the GT 53 completes the sprint in a respectable 4.1 seconds. However, it is noteworthy that these figures reflect peak specifications, and real-world performance may vary based on conditions.

Underneath its luxurious exterior, the vehicle boasts a 128 kWh battery pack for the higher trims, providing extensive range and fast charging capabilities. At a remarkable 710 kW DC charging rate, the GT 63 and GT 55 can recharge from 10% to 80% in an astonishing 12 minutes. Nevertheless, potential U.S. owners may find it challenging to locate public charging stations compatible with such high wattage, as the majority of available chargers are rated at 400 kW.

In addition to its impressive technical features, the GT SUV integrates several advanced driving technologies, including a rear-axle steering system and an artificial engine noise feature aimed at enhancing the driving experience. While these innovations may appeal to performance-driven customers, they also raise questions about the vehicle’s practicality, given its weight and limited cargo space.

As Mercedes gears up to compete in the luxury electric SUV segment, the GT SUV not only highlights the company’s commitment to electric mobility but also underscores the growing trend of high-performance electric vehicles in the automotive industry. With a competitive edge in charging technology and performance metrics, the GT SUV aims to set a new benchmark in the evolving landscape of electric driving.
