Microsoft CEO expresses satisfaction with Xbox layoffs as part of company streamlining efforts

Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has expressed optimism regarding the progress of the Xbox division, which is currently undergoing significant restructuring. Under the leadership of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the organization has recently navigated another round of layoffs, which were confirmed to impact approximately 268 employees. This move is part of broader organizational changes aimed at refining operations within the division.

In a recent appearance on a media source podcast, Nadella indicated that he holds a positive view of the Xbox brand’s future. He emphasized the strength of the intellectual property owned by Xbox and expressed confidence in the team’s capability to launch compelling games. “I feel fantastic about the IP we have right now,” Nadella stated. He highlighted the necessity for the team to develop a sustainable business model that would enhance accessibility to gaming for a wider audience, underscoring the company’s dual focus on serving as both a publisher and a platform provider for games across Xbox consoles and PCs.

Moreover, Nadella noted the ambitious goal set by Sharma and her team to restore growth to the Xbox division in the upcoming fiscal year. This aims to be achieved by not only implementing strategic changes but also by delivering noteworthy gaming experiences to the market.

These comments come in the wake of confirmed layoffs and restructuring initiatives within the Xbox division, raising concerns in the industry. Alongside the job cuts, several studios, including British developer Ninja Theory, are reportedly facing closures or significant operational shifts. In a wider organizational reshuffle, studios such as Obsidian Entertainment have been realigned under Bethesda, while Playground Games and Turn 10 have merged. Additionally, Undead Labs is transitioning to an independent model.

These restructuring efforts were initially announced in July, when Sharma reported that approximately 3,200 employees would be affected. The reduction, described as the most substantial in Xbox’s history, resulted in immediate job losses and permitted certain first-party studios, like Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games, to operate independently once more.

As Microsoft navigates these turbulent changes, the focus remains on fostering innovation and growth within the gaming sector, a critical component of its overall corporate strategy.
