Microsoft merges Copilot apps to develop a new super app
Microsoft is set to enhance its Copilot AI interface by merging its consumer and commercial functionalities into a single, streamlined application. This initiative aims to simplify user experience by consolidating personal and work-related accounts under the newly updated “Microsoft Copilot” banner. One of the primary improvements expected with this merger is the elimination of dual icons cluttering the system tray and taskbar, a change that has been eagerly anticipated by users.
The transition to a unified app interface appears to be a pivotal move for Microsoft as it lays the groundwork for what it describes as a “super app,” expected to be unveiled later this year. In its recent announcement, the company indicated that the updated Copilot app will feature an aesthetically refreshed design, which integrates functionalities from both Copilot chat and image generation alongside the productivity tools offered by Microsoft 365.
Commencing in mid-August, Microsoft plans to roll out the integrated mobile and web applications, followed by updates to Windows and Mac applications forecasted for mid-September. Current users of the separate Copilot applications will be guided through the transition, ensuring that their existing chats and content are seamlessly merged into the updated platform. While navigating through the new application may come with minor adjustments, users can anticipate an overall familiar interface.
Despite the unification of functionalities, Microsoft assures enterprise clients that their existing security and compliance measures will remain intact. Users will continue to have the ability to toggle between personal and work accounts, keeping their operations separate yet accessible. Certain features, however, such as podcasts and Deep Research functionalities, will not transition to the new app, marking a new direction for the software’s features post-August 18th.
The restructuring of the Copilot product line follows the recent appointment of a new executive to lead efforts in synchronizing consumer and commercial strategies. This consolidation suggests a significant shift towards addressing the needs of business users by enhancing the commercial interface, diversifying beyond the initial design put in place when the assistant was first launched.
