Modest Mouse, the acclaimed indie rock band, has announced that guitarist Simon O’Connor will be removed from their upcoming North American tour. This decision comes in the wake of serious allegations against him for sending inappropriate messages to a teenage fan.
On Friday, the band confirmed through social media that O’Connor, who is in his 40s, would not be joining the tour, set to commence on Tuesday in Ojai, California. In their statement, Modest Mouse expressed optimism about the tour, indicating that Seth Jabour, the guitarist of the band Les Savy Fav, will replace O’Connor.
The controversy surrounding O’Connor emerged from a post on a social media platform, where a user claiming to be a 17-year-old fan accused him of sending explicit content. The allegations included the transmission of an erotic image, alongside comments on the fan’s Instagram posts that featured swimwear. Screenshots of the alleged conversations have circulated widely, raising significant concern within the community regarding O’Connor’s behavior.
In response to these accusations, O’Connor reportedly stated that he mistook the fan for someone who had previously harassed him online. He acknowledged sending a meme that was deemed inappropriate and expressed regret for his actions. O’Connor’s assertion was that his judgment was clouded by past experiences, leading to what he described as a “hasty” decision to engage in conversation with the fan.
While O’Connor attempted to clarify his actions in a lengthy public message, he did not provide details regarding whether he will continue to be a part of Modest Mouse beyond this tour. The band has also refrained from commenting further on the matter, leaving unanswered questions about O’Connor’s future with the group.
O’Connor has been part of Modest Mouse’s touring lineup since 2021 and contributed to their recent album, “An Eraser and a Maze.” The band, led by frontman Isaac Brock, has enjoyed success in the indie rock scene, particularly with their 2004 hit “Float On” and the critically acclaimed album “Good News for People Who Love Bad News.” As of now, Brock remains the sole original member following the passing of drummer Jeremiah Green in 2022.
