Nationwide recall issued for thyroid medication affecting multiple products

The recall affects a total of 12 different levothyroxine sodium tablet packages, which include both individual packs of 10 tablets and larger boxes containing multiple blister packs. Despite initiating this recall, Major Rugby assured consumers that taking the recalled medication is “not likely to cause adverse health effects.” Nevertheless, the company emphasized the importance of returning any affected product to the retail location.

Levothyroxine sodium is commonly used to treat hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid condition, as well as certain types of thyroid cancer and enlarged thyroid glands, according to information from the Mayo Clinic. The tablets were distributed to pharmacies and medical facilities across the United States, beginning in January 2025, and sold under both Major and Cardinal brand names.

According to the manufacturer’s letter and a report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled products are considered “subpotent,” indicating that they do not deliver the intended dosage of medication. Health professionals recommend that consumers who identify the recalled products in their medicine cabinet consult with their healthcare provider for further guidance.

These include various strengths, from 25 mcg to 150 mcg, along with specific lot and expiration details for each package.
