Nic Maddinson returns to Australia cricket team following recovery from testicular cancer
Australia’s cricket team has made a significant addition to its squad ahead of the first Test against South Africa, recalling Nic Maddinson, who has triumphantly resumed his career following a battle with testicular cancer. The 34-year-old batter, who last represented Australia in Test cricket in 2016, joins the lineup amid challenges posed by injuries to other players on the team.
Maddinson’s journey back to professional cricket is notably inspiring. After being diagnosed with testicular cancer in April 2025—a condition that unfortunately spread to his lung and lymph nodes—he underwent chemotherapy and was cleared to return to competitive play by July of the same year. Despite being out of first-class cricket since his diagnosis, Maddinson successfully made a comeback in the Big Bash League and demonstrated his form with a recent score of 126 runs against Victoria in Australia’s domestic one-day competition.
In addition to Maddinson, Australia has included uncapped wicketkeeper Sam Harper in the squad as a precautionary measure for Josh Inglis, who is sidelined due to a finger injury. Harper, 29, has made a name for himself, scoring 128 runs for Australia A in an ongoing match against India A and amassing a significant total of 677 runs in the Sheffield Shield during the 2025-26 season. The inclusion of both players adds depth and versatility to Australia’s batting lineup ahead of the three-match series, slated to start on October 9 in Durban.
Selectors, including Australian chair of selectors George Bailey, believe Maddinson and Harper are well-placed to step into respective roles for the series opener. Alongside them, all-rounder Cameron Green remains a cause for concern, as he is doubtful for the first Test after sustaining a lower abdominal strain in a preceding one-day series.
The upcoming match is set to draw attention not only for the sporting action but also for the poignant story of perseverance and recovery that Maddinson embodies, highlighting the human spirit within the world of professional sports.
