Nicholas Hoult cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter Season 2

Nicholas Hoult, renowned for his versatility as an actor, has been announced as a notable addition to the cast of the forthcoming second season of HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series. The British actor is set to portray Gilderoy Lockhart, a pivotal character in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” who will be introduced to audiences following his portrayal in the original film adaptation by Kenneth Branagh.

After receiving the green light in May, filming for Season 2 is expected to commence this fall, closely following the premiere of Season 1, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” which is scheduled for Christmas. The first season, based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series, will air on HBO while also being available for streaming exclusively on HBO Max.

Dominic McLaughlin leads the cast as the titular character, Harry Potter, accompanied by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The series also features key returning figures, including Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall.

Hoult’s portrayal of Gilderoy Lockhart is notably significant, as Lockhart is characterized by his vanity and obsession with fame. He is a skilled wizard in Memory Charms and is appointed by Dumbledore to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Known for being a five-time recipient of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award, Lockhart has authored several books detailing his supposed encounters with dark creatures.

The storytelling for Season 1 is overseen by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Mark Mylod, who directed several episodes. The team includes prominent figures such as J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films, all contributing to this collaborative effort.

This venture represents Hoult’s third major role in a television series, following his work in the British drama “Skins” and the Hulu comedy “The Great,” which garnered him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Currently, he continues to explore villainous roles, including his ongoing portrayal of Lex Luthor in “Superman,” which he will reprise in “Man of Tomorrow.”

With a filmography that includes various notable performances — including roles in “Juror #2” and “Nosferatu” — Hoult is set to appear next in “How To Rob a Bank,” slated for release in November through Amazon MGM Studios. He is represented by 42, UTA, and Sloane Offer.
