Nike shares drop 10% amid disappointing revenue forecast and upcoming layoffs

Nike’s share price experienced a significant decline as the company reported disappointing fiscal first-quarter results for 2027. Following a two-day drop, shares plummeted almost 6% on Friday, continuing a downward trend that has seen the stock decrease nearly 45% since the start of the year, as noted by a media source.

In its recent earnings announcement, Nike disclosed that its revenues for the quarter were down 4%, totaling .2 billion. This decline was attributed in part to reduced sales in the Greater China region, although it was somewhat mitigated by growth in North America. The company’s net income also fell, recording a profit of 2 million compared to 7 million during the same period last year. Nike’s President and CEO, Elliott Hill, acknowledged the need for improvement and emphasized that specific initiatives would be undertaken to bolster performance in key areas, including the Nike Sportswear and Jordan Brand lines.

Contrary to expectations, Nike anticipates that revenues will continue to decline in the high-single digits over the course of 2027. This grim outlook has raised concerns among investors, prompting lowered confidence in the company’s future financial performance.

In response to ongoing financial pressures, Nike is set to introduce a new operational model named “Pace,” which aims to deliver .5 billion in cost savings by 2031. This strategy will likely involve significant layoffs, with the company already having cut 775 jobs in January and another 1,400 in April across various divisions, especially in technology. Acknowledging that such measures create uncertainty, Hill conveyed the company’s commitment to navigating these challenges thoughtfully.

The strategic reorganization will also involve modernizing Nike’s global supply chain and streamlining operations, with plans to create a new campus in India. Analysts from Citi have indicated a cautious stance regarding Nike’s future, labeling the current efforts as a “cost-cutting story” and suggesting that the company’s initial guidance falls short of market expectations.

As Nike moves forward, it plans to provide further clarity on its long-term outlook at an upcoming investor day, although the timeline for realizing the full potential of the “Pace” initiative won’t materialize until 2029. This caution underscores the increased scrutiny of Nike’s strategic decisions amidst a tumultuous market environment.
