Nintendo announces shutdown of Mario Kart Tour service
Nintendo has officially announced the discontinuation of its mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, with services set to end on September 29, 2026, at 11 PM PT, or 2 AM ET the following day. This decision marks a significant shift for fans of the franchise who enjoyed the mobile adaptation of the beloved racing series since its launch on September 25, 2019.
The end of service for Mario Kart Tour is definitive; as per statements from a media source, Nintendo has clarified that there are no plans for an offline version of the game. This conclusion stands in contrast to the treatment of other Nintendo titles, such as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which received a full “Complete” release before its service cessation.
In conjunction with this announcement, Nintendo has halted sales of rubies, the in-game currency, although players who already possess rubies can continue to utilize them within the Spotlight Shop, Mii Racing Suit Shop, and Coin Rush until the game’s official shutdown.
Additionally, specific details regarding the Gold Pass subscription offer have been outlined. Automatic renewals and new subscriptions for the Mario Kart Tour Gold Pass were suspended during maintenance on July 7, 2026. Players whose subscriptions remain active through this maintenance will continue to access benefits, minus continuous subscription perks, until the service ends on September 29, 2026. This arrangement also applies to those on a free trial period.
For players without an active subscription by the time of maintenance, a temporary offer will allow them complimentary access to Gold Pass benefits starting from August 4, 2026, until the end of service. These benefits include access to Gold Gifts, Gold Challenges, and enhanced gameplay features, such as the ability to compete in 200cc races and increased daily earning limits.
As it stands, Mario Kart Tour has served as a significant player in Nintendo’s foray into mobile gaming, appealing to both casual and dedicated fans alike. The impending closure reflects a broader trend within the industry, where games with a lifecycle tied to online connectivity face challenges in sustaining long-term player engagement.
The legacy of Mario Kart Tour is poised for reevaluation as players adapt to its absence, underlining the evolving nature of gaming in an increasingly mobile-oriented world.
