Outdoor retailer to open large adventure store in San Diego

Bass Pro Shops, a major player in the outdoor retail industry, is set to make a significant splash in Southern California with the announcement of a new location in La Mesa, marking the retailer’s first store in San Diego County. The company revealed plans to open a sprawling 148,000-square-foot facility at the Grossmont Center, with anticipated completion projected for 2028.

The introduction of this expansive outdoor “adventure store” emphasizes Bass Pro Shops’ commitment to catering to the diverse needs of outdoor enthusiasts in the region, ranging from fishing and hiking to camping and hunting. The company’s founder, Johnny Morris, a renowned angler and conservationist, expressed enthusiasm about serving the San Diego community, highlighting the area’s unique opportunities for both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

The La Mesa store is anticipated not only to enhance the local shopping landscape but also to provide a unique shopping experience through a design reflective of the region’s outdoor heritage. This commitment to creating a distinct retail environment aligns with Bass Pro Shops’ reputation for delivering memorable experiences to its customers.

In addition to transforming the retail scene, Bass Pro Shops will contribute to the local economy by generating over 150 new jobs, a development that has been welcomed by La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis. The mayor noted the positive implications of this venture, suggesting it will draw visitors from beyond the immediate area and further bolster economic growth in La Mesa.

This new store will be the sixth Bass Pro Shops location in California, with the company having established its presence in the state since 2007. Earlier this year, the retailer was recognized as “America’s Most Trusted Outdoor Retailer” for the fifth consecutive year, reinforcing its strong reputation among consumers.

The announcement comes on the heels of several closures at the Grossmont Center, a trend that has raised concerns about the future of retail in the area. Notably, the theater chain Reading Cinemas and Macy’s recently announced their departures from the complex, focal points for many shoppers.

As Bass Pro Shops prepares to launch its newest endeavor, it stands as a hopeful indicator of revitalization for both shoppers and the local economy in Southern California.
