Over 140 people dead or missing on refugee boat stranded off Mauritania
A tragic incident off the coast of Mauritania has drawn international attention as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that at least 143 refugees and migrants are dead or missing from a vessel attempting to reach Europe. The boat, having departed from Bafuloto in The Gambia, was discovered on July 18 after drifting for 25 days. Upon arrival at the port of Nouadhibou, the vessel was carrying 38 survivors along with several deceased individuals.
The UNHCR expressed deep sorrow over this loss of life, which occurred despite multiple rescue operations conducted in the region between July 14 and 18. These operations managed to save 387 individuals from various stranded boats, highlighting the challenges facing those attempting the perilous journey across the Atlantic.
Reports indicate that the ill-fated boat had set out with approximately 160 people onboard but ran out of fuel during its journey. The Mauritanian coastguard has since confirmed that 122 individuals remain unaccounted for, a situation that underscores the dangers associated with this migration route. The dead are primarily from sub-Saharan African countries, although specific details regarding the circumstances of their deaths remain undisclosed.
The UNHCR has identified the route to the Canary Islands as one of the world’s deadliest, exacerbated by long distances and the use of overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels. In light of this tragedy, the agency has called for increased access to education and job opportunities as essential measures to provide viable alternatives to these dangerous crossings.
Mauritania plays a crucial role as a significant departure point for migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands each year, with tens of thousands risking their lives on this treacherous route. In recent months, however, the number of arrivals has substantially declined due to a European Union-funded crackdown on irregular migration.
