Paramount+ Orders Limited Series Sequel to ‘Clueless’ Starring Alicia Silverstone
Paramount+ has officially greenlit a new limited series continuation of the beloved 1995 film “Clueless,” featuring Alicia Silverstone, who will reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz. The return of this nostalgic franchise has been much anticipated, as it marks a significant moment for fans of the cult classic. Paramount+, which owns the rights to the “Clueless” intellectual property, is set to begin filming the series in Los Angeles in 2027.
The storyline will unfold 30 years after the original film, reintroducing Cher as a successful businesswoman and mother. However, the trials of raising a teenage daughter will lead her to feel “clueless” about parenting once again. This dynamic reflects a universal theme of familial challenges across generations, allowing the new series to appeal to both longtime fans and contemporary viewers.
The creative team behind the revival includes Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, all of whom have substantial experience in television production. Schwartz and Savage previously produced notable shows like “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” while Weiss brought projects such as “Freaky Friday” and “Dollface” to fruition. Silverstone will not only star but also serve as an executive producer, alongside the original film’s writer-director, Amy Heckerling, and producer Robert Lawrence, ensuring that the new rendition remains faithful to its predecessors.
This project has been in development for a substantial seven years, as CBS Studios has worked diligently to navigate various iterations of the “Clueless” narrative. There was an earlier attempt to create a series focusing on Dionne, another character from the original film, but it ultimately failed to materialize after being set up at Peacock.
The recent decision by Paramount+ to move forward with this sequel series comes in the wake of a corporate restructuring after Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount. The studio is clearly eager to invest in the recognizable “Clueless” brand, which has already proven its staying power in popular culture. Not only was the original film a commercial success, but it recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special screening that reunited the original cast.
As the new series prepares to enter production, it is expected to benefit from California tax incentives, although details have yet to be disclosed. This project represents a significant step for Paramount+, marking its first major scripted series order following recent corporate changes, and reflecting a broader trend of nostalgic revivals in today’s entertainment landscape.
