Russia and Ukraine initiate ceasefire for Orthodox Easter celebrations.

The recent temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has renewed hopes for diplomacy amid ongoing conflict. This truce, coinciding with Orthodox Easter, highlights the complexities of negotiations while underlining the critical role of international mediation, particularly from the United Arab Emirates. Despite skepticism from both sides, the moment presents an opportunity for potential progress in a conflict that has persisted for over four years.
A temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has come into effect, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirming that Kyiv will uphold the truce contingent on Moscow’s compliance. The ceasefire, which is set to last for 32 hours—from 4:00 PM local time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday to midnight on Sunday—was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with Orthodox Easter celebrations, following a proposal from Zelenskyy made over a week earlier. Both parties have agreed to observe the ceasefire, raising hopes for a pause in hostilities, albeit with underlying skepticism.
Zelenskyy declared on social media that “Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind. The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side.” However, the Ukrainian military has prepared to react swiftly if any violations occur. Just hours before the truce began, Russia reportedly launched over 160 drones toward Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to numerous others in the eastern and southern regions of the country, particularly affecting Odesa.
Conversely, Russian officials reported casualties related to drone attacks attributed to Ukraine on Russian-occupied areas of the eastern Donetsk and Kherson regions. This exchange of hostilities heightens the concerns of the population regarding the durability of the temporary ceasefire. Many Ukrainians recall the previous ceasefire during Orthodox Easter last year, which was marred by mutual accusations of violations, leading to the continued mistrust.
Despite the prevailing tensions, both sides engaged in a prisoner exchange on Saturday, with 175 prisoners of war swapped. The United Arab Emirates facilitated this significant development, underscoring its role as a mediator in the ongoing conflict. Over the course of the four-year war, Kyiv and Moscow have conducted regular prisoner exchanges, which represent some of the few tangible outcomes from multiple rounds of United States-mediated negotiations that currently remain stalled over territorial disputes.
Ukraine has suggested a freeze on conflict along the existing front lines, but Russia has rebutted this proposition, insisting on Ukraine relinquishing control over all territory within the Donetsk region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia did not engage with the US regarding the ceasefire proposal ahead of time, and there remains no immediate indication of renewed trilateral peace talks.
At present, fighting has significantly slowed on the front lines, with Russia achieving small territorial advancements at a substantial cost. Nevertheless, Ukraine has recently regained ground in the southeast, leading to a deceleration of Russian advances since late 2025, according to information from the Institute for the Study of War. Moscow now occupies just over 19 percent of Ukraine, with most gains made during the initial phases of the conflict.
