Saudi-led coalition intercepts and destroys six ballistic missiles fired by Houthi forces.
Escalating tensions in the Middle East are underscored by recent military engagements, particularly between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement. Amidst these confrontations, regional security measures are being bolstered as military alliances aim to safeguard crucial infrastructure and maintain stability in the area.
Saudi-led coalition forces active in Yemen have reported the interception of multiple ballistic missiles reportedly launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi group. According to Major General Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-backed Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, six missiles targeting Saudi cities, including Taif and the strategically significant port of Yanbu, were successfully destroyed. This incident took place on Thursday and highlights ongoing hostilities in the region.
Saudi air defense systems played a critical role in intercepting some of the missiles aimed at these cities, as confirmed by Al-Malki in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency. At this time, there was no immediate claim of responsibility from the Houthis or affiliated groups.
Adding to the gravity of recent events, the Reuters news agency reported that a missile defense system operated by Greek military personnel in Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted not only a ballistic missile but also a drone in the vicinity of Yanbu, an essential location for the kingdom’s oil refining operations. A Greek security source indicated that both threats were neutralized without providing detailed information about their origin.
Yanbu port is vital for Saudi Arabia, particularly when maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz are obstructed. Earlier on the same day, Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defense issued warnings of potential threats in Mecca and surrounding regions, including Tabuk, Jeddah, and Taif. Fortunately, these alerts were later downgraded as authorities confirmed that the cities were out of immediate danger.
It is noteworthy that this recent escalation marks the first security alert in almost a decade for Mecca, the spiritual epicenter of Islam, home to the Kaaba. Last week, Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting a drone launched by the Houthis toward Mecca, which the group vehemently denied, with Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi calling the claims a “heinous lie.”
The Houthis have intensified their attacks within Saudi territory following a declaration of a naval blockade in July, which added a new dimension to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. They recently executed a rapid offensive that secured their control over Yemen’s western coast, advancing to the strategic Bab al-Mandeb waterway on the Red Sea.
In response, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces reported on Thursday that they successfully repelled Houthi attacks across multiple fronts in the southwestern Taiz governorate. Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili, a spokesman for these forces, conveyed that the Houthis attempted coordinated attacks the previous night in a bid to capture positions along a critical road linking the Aden, Lahj, and Taiz governorates.
