Senior ISIL commander reported killed in a raid in the outskirts of Damascus, Syria.
Recent operations by Syrian security forces signal a determined effort to dismantle ISIL’s presence in the region, demonstrating ongoing resilience amidst the challenges posed by this extremist group. Following the arrest of a senior commander, Mohammed Shahadeh, in a targeted raid near Damascus, these developments highlight the collaborative efforts between national security units and international coalition forces to enhance local security and restore stability in affected areas.
Syrian authorities have intensified their operations against ISIL (ISIS) fighters in the vicinity of Damascus, culminating in the recent elimination of a high-profile figure, Mohammed Shahadeh—also known as Abu Omar Shaddad—who was identified as the group’s governor of Hauran. The Ministry of Interior reported that Shahadeh, considered one of ISIL’s senior commanders and a significant threat to local security, was killed in a targeted raid executed by specialized units in the town of al-Buweida, located southwest of the capital. This operation was carried out following verified intelligence and extensive surveillance.
The comprehensive operation involved collaboration with the General Intelligence Directorate and was coordinated with international coalition forces, emphasizing a united front against extremism. This strategic action reflects the ongoing commitment to enhance security in Syria and to combat the remnants of ISIL, which has largely escalated its activities against Kurdish-led forces remaining in northern Syria.
This operation follows the arrest of another significant ISIL figure, Taha al-Zoubi, in a separate but equally coordinated effort near Damascus. According to state-run SANA news agency, internal security forces executed a well-planned operation, arresting al-Zoubi and seizing a suicide belt and military weapon. Brigadier General Ahmad al-Dalati, who oversees internal security in the Damascus countryside, confirmed that the raid aimed at dismantling another ISIL hideout in the region.
Despite suffering military defeats in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, ISIL’s network continues to function, manifesting in smaller attacks across different territories, including parts of Africa and Afghanistan. Nevertheless, Syrian forces remain resolute in their determination to dismantle ISIL’s operational capabilities and to ensure a more secure environment for local communities as part of their broader commitment to regional stability and peace.
