Shane Gillis Apologizes After Using F-Bomb in ‘SNL’ Dr. Seuss Sketch
Shane Gillis recently made headlines during his return to “Saturday Night Live,” where a slip of the tongue resulted in an unexpected on-air moment during a Dr. Seuss-inspired sketch. While portraying a character skeptical of the protagonist Sam I Am, portrayed by cast member Andrew Dismukes, Gillis unintentionally dropped an expletive that was deemed unsuitable for live television.
In the skit, Gillis, taking on the role of a defensive son, confronted Dismukes’ character, who was urging his father, played by Mikey Day, to try green eggs and ham. In a moment of frustration, Gillis exclaimed, “Hey, what the hell is wrong with you? My dad said he doesn’t like them. Walk away,” followed by the inadvertent profanity. The slip came as a surprise, as Gillis quickly covered his mouth realizing the error.
Although the error appeared to go unnoticed by live viewers, Day later referenced the slip, humorously chiding Gillis’ character by stating, “You’re a loser, and you said a bad word!” to which Gillis acknowledged, “Yes I did.” At the conclusion of the sketch, he even took a moment to apologize for the earlier incident, resulting in quite a memorable episode.
Following the broadcast, the sketch was shared on social media by “SNL,” although they took the precaution of muting the offensive term. It was, however, audible for those who viewed it via the Peacock streaming service. This moment is particularly significant considering Gillis’s tumultuous history with “SNL”; he was removed from the cast shortly after being announced in 2019 due to past controversies surrounding his use of racially insensitive language. Since then, he has returned to host the show three times, including his appearances in 2024 and 2025.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by live television productions, where humor and spontaneity can lead to unexpected outcomes. Gillis’s return to the iconic show is marked not only by his comedic performance but also by the scrutiny and public attention that encapsulate his career trajectory.
