South Africa declares its 4.7-mile freight train the longest in the world

In a remarkable demonstration of engineering and logistics, Transnet, the South African state-owned transport company, has successfully conducted a test run featuring what it claims to be the world’s longest freight train. Measuring an impressive 7.6 kilometers (approximately 4.7 miles) in length, the train comprised 696 freight wagons and undertook an extensive journey from Saldanha Bay, located on South Africa’s west coast, to an iron ore mine in the interior of the country. This historic trip was completed on October 18 and covered a total distance of 860 kilometers (about 534 miles).

To facilitate the successful operation of this lengthy freight train, Transnet employed a combination of electric and diesel locomotives, which were strategically positioned throughout the train. Notably, the wagons were empty during this two-day journey, emphasizing the operational capabilities of Transnet and its commitment to optimizing the transport of minerals and commodities across vast distances in South Africa.

Russell Baatjies, the CEO of Transnet Freight Rail, noted that this endeavor serves as a strategic learning initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s capabilities in the transportation of goods. Such longer train configurations, while less common globally, highlight the efficiencies that can be achieved by freight trains, especially in regions with extensive rail networks, like South Africa and Australia, where some of the longest trains in the world operate.

Transnet asserts that its achievement surpasses a previous record held by a 4.5-mile-long (7.24-kilometer) freight train that traveled from an iron ore mine to a port in Western Australia in 2001, potentially placing South Africa at the forefront of global freight transportation innovation.

As the world shifts toward more sustainable and efficient transport solutions, this milestone reflects South Africa’s capabilities in logistics and rail infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future endeavors in the freight transport sector. The successful test run not only exemplifies engineering prowess but also opens avenues for improved mineral and goods transportation, which is critical for economic growth.

The record-breaking journey underscores the potential of rail transport as a key component in global supply chains, particularly within the context of increasing demand for efficient and sustainable freight solutions.
