South Africa police search for suspects following twin shootings that killed nearly 30 people
Police in South Africa are currently engaged in a widespread manhunt following a series of brutal shootings over the weekend, which left over thirty individuals dead and numerous others injured. The most severe of the three shootings occurred in the township of Wedela, situated in the West Rand District, near Johannesburg. According to police reports, eight unidentified assailants armed with pistols and AK-47 rifles launched an attack on patrons who were socializing outside a tavern. This initial assault transpired late Saturday evening, with the suspects subsequently entering the tavern and continuing their barrage inside. Preliminary reports indicate that 17 individuals were killed in this attack, while an additional 15 sustained injuries. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shooters searched patrons for valuables, taking phones before fleeing the scene in two unspecified vehicles.
In a separate incident early Sunday morning, ten individuals were shot and killed at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, within the Western Cape province. Similar to the Wedela attack, gunmen entered the premises and opened fire indiscriminately at patrons. Five victims died at the scene, and five others succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack after being transported to medical facilities. Law enforcement officials have initiated a manhunt to apprehend the suspects involved, but as of yet, no arrests have been made. The police commissioner has indicated that a possible motive may be tied to business disputes among local establishments.
Additionally, authorities are investigating a separate shooting incident in the township of Khayelitsha, where four individuals were killed. This incident further emphasizes the increasing pattern of violence sweeping across the country’s poorer communities, prompting alarm and calls for decisive action.
Experts attribute the rise in mass shootings and violent crime in South Africa to various factors, including the proliferation of organized criminal gangs involved in drugs, extortion, and illegal mining operations. A recent organized crime index has highlighted the country’s role as a transit point for cocaine destined for international markets.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has openly acknowledged organized crime as a pressing threat to democracy and societal stability in South Africa, stating that the government is committed to deploying military support for police efforts aimed at combating this growing issue.
