Stellar Blade Developer Highlights New Hero Design and Appreciates Support from Sony

Shift Up, the South Korean studio behind the upcoming game “Stellar Blade: Blood Rain,” has been actively discussing development updates following the game’s recent reveal. At the forefront of these discussions is studio head Hyung-Tae Kim, who recently spoke with a media source about significant changes to the game’s character design, particularly the introduction of a new heroine named Evie, who will replace the established character Eve.

Evie has been designed with a younger and shorter appearance, a deliberate choice aimed at enhancing the game’s close-quarters melee combat dynamics. Kim indicated that this character model is intended to project a strong, stylish persona, which is a marked shift from the previous design aesthetic associated with Eve. Despite the innovative direction, this change has sparked some controversy, particularly among Western audiences, who have questioned whether Evie’s youthful appearance is appropriate given the context of the first installment’s more sexually suggestive character designs.

In response to apprehensions surrounding Evie’s portrayal, Kim and his team at Shift Up maintain that the petite stature serves to create a compelling contrast with her fierce combat style. This design philosophy aims to reshape player perceptions and expectations as the game progresses through the development cycle. The original character, Eve, underwent numerous revisions before the final release, and it remains to be seen whether Evie’s design will similarly evolve.

In addition to character design, Kim addressed the studio’s decision to self-publish “Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.” While he acknowledged the benefits of collaborating with a publisher like Sony, he also expressed a desire for more agility in the game’s marketing and distribution efforts. The first “Stellar Blade” achieved significant sales in regions like China, particularly on PC, and the studio appears eager to capitalize on these markets with this new installment.

As of now, Kim has noted that development has been underway for just one year. While progress is reportedly on track, it is unlikely that “Stellar Blade: Blood Rain” will release in the immediate future. This timeframe may prove advantageous as the team addresses various aspects of the game, especially in light of recent discoveries of generative AI in the development assets, which players hope will be completely refined before the game’s launch.
