According to Article 111 of Iran’s Constitution, a temporary leadership council is authorized to assume the duties of the supreme leader until a permanent successor is elected. The interim council is composed of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a member of the Guardian Council. These leaders are expected to guide the country through this tumultuous period.
Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a key figure in the interim council, has been a member of the Guardian Council since 2019, an institution mandating that laws and policies conform to Islamic principles. Arafi leads Friday prayers in Qom, Iran’s pivotal religious hub, and is instrumental in the training of religious scholars nationwide.
The President, Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist and trained heart surgeon, assumes a significant role in the council.
