Tragedy as migrant boat capsizes off Africa, claiming 139 lives including 15 children
At least 139 individuals, including several children, lost their lives after a vessel carrying over 300 migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti, a recent report from a media source revealed. The tragedy occurred during the perilous journey undertaken by many migrants seeking better economic opportunities in the Arabian Peninsula.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), which responded to the incident, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the families affected. Alexandre Coissac, the IOM’s chief of mission in Djibouti, lamented the situation, emphasizing the tragic loss suffered by families who may never know the fate of their loved ones. According to IOM estimations, the official death toll only accounts for bodies recovered and buried by local authorities in Djibouti, with additional deceased potentially being interred by fellow migrants without formal recognition.
Witnesses recounted that the migrants boarded the vessel on the evening of October 8, only to have it capsize shortly after departing. Overcrowding was identified as a critical factor contributing to the disaster, as the vessel was reportedly carrying more people than it could safely accommodate. Coissac indicated that local authorities were overwhelmed by the number of bodies that washed ashore during the aftermath.
Among those lost were numerous children, including nine girls and six boys, while at least 80 survivors were identified, all of whom were Ethiopian nationals. The IOM has since relocated the survivors to its rescue center in Obock for medical and psychological support.
As rescue operations continued, fears mounted for the more than 80 individuals still unaccounted for, marking this incident as one of the deadliest shipwrecks in recent memory along the hazardous route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen. This maritime path has long been fraught with peril as countless migrants attempt to reach Gulf nations in pursuit of work.
Importantly, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers migrants face on this route amidst escalating conflicts in Yemen, which continues to experience violence from opposing factions. The IOM reported a troubling trend, noting that at least 900 migrants perished or were reported missing along this migration corridor in the previous year alone. Furthermore, the organization underscored the pressing need for established safe and legal migration pathways to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As the situation develops, many continue to call for urgent action from governments and donors to address the inherent dangers posed by irregular migration, highlighting that prompt intervention could save lives and mitigate the suffering faced by countless individuals undertaking these treacherous journeys.
